Problem

Rivian sells customers on the dream of adventure—but for many first-time EV owners, that dream comes with friction. Trip planning is fragmented, and EV-specific needs—like range anxiety, charging access, and logistics—can turn a spontaneous idea into a stressful experience.

Solution

The Adventure Platform is a suite of digital planning tools that support a range of trip planning styles. It prioritizes emotional ease and clarity, helping users navigate complexity without feeling overwhelmed. By pairing reliable data with thoughtful design, it enables more confident decision-making on the road and at home.

I led the team through a qualitative, research-forward strategy to identify core tension points in the user journey. I synthesized insights into actionable experience principles that shaped both product scope and design tone. The result was a responsive, emotionally aware experience that reflects Rivian’s mission and customer mindset.

I used a mixed-methods approach including self-immersion, diary studies, guerrilla intercepts at charging stations, and surveys to understand user behavior, pain points, and motivations—especially around EV-specific uncertainties.

I facilitated workshops across product, research, marketing, and design to align on opportunity areas, translate insight into vision, and co-define what the Adventure Platform should deliver—both functionally and emotionally.

Early research revealed a core tension: people craved spontaneous travel but were weighed down by fragmented tools. Planning often begins outside the vehicle on mobile—yet most apps ignored key needs like desired arrival times, nearby amenities, and range buffers. We focused on clarity and context, not just directions.

Not all charging stations deliver the same experience. To reduce uncertainty, we created Charging Scores—real-world ratings powered by Rivian vehicle data. We embedded these scores with network-specific education to help users understand what to expect before they arrive, building confidence with every charge.

The product had to do more than calculate routes—it had to reflect the spirit of exploration. We designed for different planning mindsets, creating an interface that felt responsive, emotionally attuned, and open—never rigid or overly technical.
